Tips To Having A Safe Hike
Hiking is a great way to spend time with your kids and enjoy the beauty that the earth offers. There are definitely certain things one must know before going on a hike and this guide will offer you several tips to help be as safe as possible on your journey. Whether you’re a rookie or a veteran, these tips should always be followed.
Many people often overlook the difficulty level of a hike. It’s much harder than people think, especially the tougher trails out there. If you’re not in shape, do not start your first hike on a 3-day trip. Start slow and take your time. Or get fit before going on your first hike! Anytime you do go on a hike, always let someone know where you’re heading.
Carrying a map, guide and/or compass can end up being a life saver. Always make sure you have one of these, ideally all 3 if possible. Many trails will have markers throughout the trail which should help you navigate the way. If you decide to go off trail at any point take note of any landmarks as well as markings, in order to get back on track. Maps/Guides will also help you if you do find yourself off track.
One of the biggest spoilers that hikers face is dehydration. It’s always important to pack water and to pack more than enough of it. Always pack more than you think you’ll need, but if you’re planning on hiking for more than one day then look into buying a purifying system. You don’t want it to weigh you down too much. It’s highly recommended to never drink untreated water.
Wearing the properly clothing can also be crucial to making your hike more comfortable. I always recommend wearing layers and you can remove as you please. Always bring rain gear and wear hiking boots. Boots provide extra support for your ankles, but make sure you’ve broken them in to prevent any blisters.
Don’t feel the need to exceed your limits. If you feel like taking a break, then find a comfortable spot to rest and take your time. Take in all the beautiful surroundings until you feel rested and comfortable enough to keep hiking. If you’re feeling ill or too tired, you’re best to return to base and stop there.
Before leaving, make sure you know how to start a proper fire. Even if you’re only going for a one day hike, you never know how long you’ll end up out there. A fire can help keep you warm, keep animals away as well as provide a way for a search team to find you if you happen to go missing.
Hopefully this guide has helped you and you use these tips when you’re ready for your hike. There are several other things to bring along, such as your first-aid kit and bug spray but hopefully this has helped with a starting point!
