Ten Exquisite Motion Picture Commentaries For Your Leisure Amusement

Wonderful critiques of some of the greatest motion pictures that you may choose from starting here. Cry the Beloved Country - Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton’s beloved book, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time well-to-do landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been murdered. We see extraordinary work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)

Shooter - Retired Marine Corp Sniper Bob Lee Swagger is requested to come to Washington, to help stalk another sniper that will try to murder the President. What happens to him next is a full-blown shock. The same US government people that he is helping are in fact setting him up to take the fall for the murder. He somehow escapes when he is shot, and is now on the run. He is also prepared to fight back.

The Ploughman’s Lunch - Complex, cynical denunciation of British behaviors, ethics and affairs of state, focusing on the exercises of totally selfish journalist (Pryce) and others throughout the Falklands battle. The movie is fairly perceptive, within the restraints of its outlook. Cast includes Jonathan Pryce, Tim Curry, Rosemary Harris, Blunt Finlay, and Charlie Dore. (100 minutes, 1983)

In Enemy Country - So-so designer of WW2 enthrall, set in France and England, filmed on a back-lot. Not very persuading. Cast includes Tony Franciosa, Anjanette Comer, Guy Stockwell, Paul Hubschmid, Tom Bell, and Emile Genest. (107 minutes, 1968)

The Geisha Boy - Jerry, an clumsy warlock, voyages to Japan with catastrophic repercussions. Imaginative graphic gags; there’s a clever pattern characterizing the Los Angeles Dodgers and, in particular, Gil Hodges. Cast includes Jerry Lewis, Marie McDonald, Sessue Hayakawa, Nobu McCarthy, Suzanne Pleshette, Barton MacLane, and Robert Hirano. (98 minutes, 1958)

Danny Boy - Ambitious although arrogant, unrelentingly tedious melodrama of sax player Rea, who trades his sax for a gun after observing a triple assassination. This was Jordan’s directorial debut, which he as well did the screenplay. He and leading guy Rea later reteamed for The Weeping Game. (92 minutes, 1982)

The Gorgeous Hussy - Megastars fill the cast in this fictionalized historical drama of Peggy O’Neal, President Andrew Jackson’s secret lover. The cast is delightfully costumed in well assigned settings. The movie is based on the novel by Samuel Hopkins Joyce. Cast includes Joan Crawford, Robert Taylor, Lionel Barrymore, Franchot Tone, Melvyn Douglas, James Stewart, Alison Skipworth, Beulah Bondi, and Gene Lockhart. (102 minutes, 1936)

Lunatics and Lovers - Aristocrat Mastroianni has a imaginary spouse; an organ grinder persuades hooker Mori to “impersonate” her. While it is not brainless, it’s unexciting. Cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Mori, Lino Morelli, Flora Carabella, and Adriano Celentano. (93 minutes, 1976)

They Only Kill Their Masters - Extraordinary group of actors in troubling modem-night mystery set in coastal California town; tries for Daniel Hammett sensation, does not relatively make it. Police officer Garner tries to resolve slaughter of pregnant female, with formidable Doberman pinscher figuring significantly. Not poor, however a disappointment. Cast includes James Garner, Katharine Ross, Hal Holbrook, Harry Guardino, June Allyson, Peter Lawford, and Ann Rutherford. (97 minutes, 1972)

Sgt. Bilko - An army comedy with Steve Martin, Dan Akroyd and Phil Hartman. Sgt Bilko does fundamentally everything but army duties with his platoon of soldiers. Life in Sgt. Bilko’s army is rather nice. That is until Major Thorn shows up and tries to ruin the fun.
