There are a lot of suggestions out there telling you how to defend your guard. Some of these are: do not allow the other fighter to get a hold of your knees, find an angle, or drive your legs to the ground. However, there is one suggestion that I often see novices failing to do. Head control is critical in retaining guard.

LEARNING FAST is important for every jiu jitsu student. If you’ve been taking classes for any length of time, you’ll quickly find a deep need to get better faster. You know some moves - a submission, a sweep - and it’s frustrating when you aren’t able to use them on your classmates. You can grapple for hours on end, but it’s not making you progress quickly enough.

There will be preferences when it comes time to learn Martial Arts, but there are also a couple of things that are fairly obvious, and that we will be able to agree on. Interestingly, I came across this information many years ago, and have used it myself. It deals with analyzing the worth of media in transmitting data. The worst way to absorb data is through the movies or TV. This is because the martial art techniques that you will see on the silver screen, whether it is the art of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, or whoever, has been altered for the camera. Yes, it may look fantastic, but stuntmen and camera cuts are making it look good.

I know that whenever I write one of these pieces on Mixed Martial Arts I am going to get hate mail, but the truth is the truth, and one can only hope to rescue the misbegotten. That bit of drab aside, I actually love MMA, especially the UFC grudge fights. There is enough Roman in me to enjoy the circus.

I sauntered into my first American Kenpo Karate dojo over 4 decades ago. This was the Rod Martin offshoot of Tracys Kenpo, which had broken from Ed Parker Kenpo Karate. Therein lies the first problem with the art of American Kenpo.

Some people might not want you to know this, but it is pretty darned easy to learn good karate or kenpo, or whatever combat art you wish to study, from Martial Arts DVDs. You can study hard core self defense, fighting taekwondo, classical gong fu fighting moves. You can learn just about any fighting art there is, and there are judo dvds, taekwondo DVDs, you can even consider martial arts DVD rental!

I know, kickboxing karate isn’t an art, but it is a translation. When you translate from karate to kickboxing, or from kickboxing to karate, you can win every single fight you are in by knowing the three things I am going to tell you here. We are dealing only with the hands, mind you, so you have to control your distance to make sure that you stay at punching distance.
