ATV shocks reduce shock impulses and disperse energy to prevent damage to the ATV itself. They consist of a gas or fluid-filled cylinder containing a sliding piston. The force of impact pushes the piston into the chamber, which transfers the energy to the gas or fluid inside.

Shocks are a necessary part to have on your ATV vehicle. How and where do your ride your ATV? What sort of trails do you ride it on? You need to ask yourself these questions when looking to purchase new ones.

What is your primary reason for ATV usage? Racing is a whole different world with ATV’s as opposed to recreational use. You need to know what you want to be doing with the vehicle and your budget as this will determine what type of ATV shocks you will need.

Racing shocks will give you a peak performance but take away some on comfort for your ride. Your ride will be anything but smooth and the longevity of the shocks will be short lived. You will possibly get a 1st place ranking while racing with them though.

Another thing to look for is how much adjustment you need. While adjustability can be a good thing, it needs to be done by someone who knows what they are doing. Don’t ignore the fact that adjusting needs to be taken care of, even if you aren’t racing your vehicle.

If you are a racer, then you will get a lot out of adjusting your shocks, more so than a casual rider would. It’s a great option to have with all the different race conditions you face as well as riding on different race tracks. Recreational riders don’t need to be as concerned with this as they ride on more stable terrain.

You need to decide on how much you want to invest into you ATV shocks. If not thought out before hand, it can be an expensive impulse purchase. If your budget is on the lower end, then front shock absorbers should do the job fine and you can add rear ones later on down the road.
